Our defence sector client is currently recruiting for an SC cleared Lead Structures Engineer to take responsibility for all areas of Structures, Containment and Primary-Secondary Shielding for all in service submarines. This is a contract role starting ASAP until 30/09/2025, offering a day rate of up to £750 per day (Inside IR35) and a hybrid working arrangement (3 days per week onsite in Bristol)

BACKGROUND

The post has responsibility for all areas of Structures, Containment and Primary-Secondary Shielding for all in service submarines. The post has responsibility for 7 non-NSRP Live Files including containment structures and isolation for all in-service submarines and the Shore Test Facility (STF).

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure in-service submarines remain safe to operate with respect to Structural Strength when at sea, alongside and during docking/undocking evolutions. Ensure safety risks remain tolerable and ALARP within the key hazard areas of Structural Strength by managing the Key Hazard areas High Level Hazards iaw TOR SM and ISM safety policy.
  • Set Design Authority Requirements (DAR) for surveys, repairs, ballast changes and design changes within the remit of Structural Strength and for all areas of responsibilities across the team for maintenance periods carried out on inservice submarines
  • Assess OPDEFs for their impact on stability and manoeuvring and control and issue DA requirements to address them and guidance to operators to mitigate any risks.
  • Develop design changes to improve safety or capability when required.
  • Review Design changes for impact on structural strength.
  • Provide submarine structures advice and input to Submarine Enterprise projects (infrastructure, platform design and build, trials programmes, etc) beyond the in-service support of current classes when or if they are formally accepted into the ISM SASP/business plan.

EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL

  • A Level 6 qualification in a relevant engineering discipline, or a lesser qualification with significant relevant and demonstrable previous experience.
  • Nuclear Introductory Course
  • System Safety Awareness
  • System Safety in Action (SSIA)
  • Safety & Environmental Management (SEMT)
  • 4 years’ experience in a maritime post.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience of submarine specific
  • structures.

DESIRABLE

  • Knowledge of Mechanical Engineering
  • Knowledge of Marine Engineering
  • Knowledge of Constructive Engineering
